Man shot dead in Melbourne's western suburbs

SYDNEY, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- A man has been shot dead in the suburbs of Melbourne in the southeast Australian state of Victoria, police said on Friday.

Emergency services were called to reports of shots being fired in the suburb of Caroline Springs, about 21 km west of central Melbourne, at 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, according to Victoria Police.

A man, who has not been formally identified, was located with a gunshot wound a short time later, police said. He was taken to hospital and subsequently died.

Police cordoned off the area and established a crime scene, with detectives from the homicide squad investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that a gun could be seen lying on the street on Friday morning as police gathered evidence.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.
